Reports say that 58% of Californian voters voted in favor of Proposition 22, the proposal backed by Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash to campaign against AB5 legislation that would classify gig-workers as employees. In case you need a quick refresher, on July 16 someone seized control of several prominent Twitter accounts and tweeted a Bitcoin wallet address, promising to give anyone who sent money to it double the amount. Needless to say, that didn’t happen. The compromised accounts include Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Kim Kardashian, Apple, and Uber. According to Twitter, which updated its security post about the incident, the hackers targeted 130 accounts and tweeted from 45 of them....

Facebook head honcho Mark Zuckerberg has been particularly and repeatedly critical of Apple strapping on a pair of six shooters and heading to Advert Town to protect your privacy. The City of Reno, Washoe County and the State of Nevada have announced a software partnership to track energy and emissions data in real-time. They claim Reno is the first city in the country to undertake real-time carbon tracking in line with the standards set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The governments are working with start-up Ledger8760 to use its carbon mapping technology to track hourly, daily and monthly carbon emission data against reduction targets outlined internally and in the Paris Agreement on climate change....

For the full background, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to force the China-based ByteDance to either sell its US operations to an American company or risk being banned in the US. Rivian has started work on its “adventure network,” its Tesla Supercharger rival, and its hired Carrington Bradley, Tesla’s former senior manager of charger deployment, to do it, Electrek reports. Whilst at Tesla, Bradley was responsible for managing a team of project managers to “design, permit, and build” Supercharger locations. Under Bradley’s leadership, Tesla grew from building 50 to 150 Supercharger sites per year. Royal Mail has committed to the full electrification of its vehicles by 2030, and, in June, added 3,000 electric vans to its fleet, achieving an impressive tenfold increase. Now, the British postal service will start trialing twelve micro electric vehicles (MEVs) as part of the company’s aim to further reduce the emissions associated with its operations. The MEVs will deliver letters and small parcels in residential areas as a potential — lower carbon — alternative to larger vans, typically shared between two postal workers....

Scribble’s being touted as a time-saver. In the demo during WWDC, Apple demonstrated how the feature works in any text field. If you’re working in Illustrator and decide you want to search for a reference picture, for example, you won’t have to put your Pencil down. You can use handwriting in any text field and Scribble will transcribe it. This is useful in the Notes app where users often use a combination of drawings and text....

Today the company announced the SSL 2 and SSL 2+, its first dedicated audio interfaces for personal studios. This data will train algorithms to play sounds that trigger the desired feelings. According to the patent, composers would first create musical motifs for characters, activities, areas, and even player personalities: The algorithms would then adjust the motifs to the gamer’s style of play, the time of day, state of the game, and the hours that they’ve been playing....
