The word projector used to mean something very different. If you grew up in the 20th century, projectors were either almost room-sized beasts that dominated moviehouses — or they were those reel-to-reel 16mm dinosaurs that AV kids scooted from classroom to classroom on rickety old carts. Either way, they were extremely big and unwieldy. Thanks to technology, film is practically a thing of the past, and so are most of those giant projectors....

It seems Microsoft heard my complaints; the company today introduced the $60 Pro Intellimouse, which keeps its predecessor’s classic shape but adds gamer-friendly features like a new sensor, improved key actuation, customizable buttons, and a textured gradient finish. The team says that their system can forecast whether a patient may need more intensive care resources up to four days in advance. They believe hospitals could use it to anticipate demand for resources and avoid sending at-risk patients home too early. Their approach differs from most previous attempts to predict COVID-19 deterioration by applying machine learning techniques to X-rays. These typically use supervised training and single timeframe images. This method has shown promise, but its potential is constrained by the time-intensive process of manually labeling data....

The algorithm, called InfoShield, searches for escort ads with strong similarities, which can be a sign of trafficking. Per the study paper: Law enforcement agencies typically look for HT cases manually. InfoShield is designed to speed up the search by detecting mini-clusters of ads, grouping them together, and summarizing the common parts. “Our algorithm can put the millions of advertisements together and highlight the common parts,” said study co-author Christos Faloutsos in a statement....

A company called LCG Entertainment bought the rights to Telltale’s back catalog and some of its licenses, according to a report from Polygon. The licenses include The Wolf Among Us and the Batman series, though not the likes of Walking Dead or Stranger Things. The state of other licenses is unclear. LCG is run by Jamie Ottilie and Brian Waddle, neither of whom worked at Telltale prior to its closure — that’s not just under new management, that’s Telltale in-name-only....

A few days ago, the usually-accurate Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a research note asserting that the iPhone 13 would probably be able to make calls via satellite. This was a big deal for some users, as it meant you could theoretically make calls anywhere outdoors in the world. Unfortunately, evidence suggests Kuo may have gotten some of the details wrong this time. Kuo originally asserted that Apple is planning to use a customized Qualcomm X60 chip that would support the n53 band used by Globalstar, a satellite communications company....
